Vision, Mission and Values

Alberta Ingenuity began to invest in building science and engineering capacity in Alberta in 2001. Since then it has catalyzed growth and impact in key areas.

Further acceleration is predicted based on the combination of current growth models and program plans.  

Vision:
Every Albertan an Innovator: Ingenuity catalyzes Alberta's innovation system, creates compelling research results and stimulates new economic and social development.

Mission:
To establish world-class research hubs, fuel innovative companies and attract creative, resourceful people who lead contributions to knowledge, policy, economy and global human development. 

Values:
These values guide Ingenuity's strategies, decisions and actions:

• Investments for the good of Alberta: The billion dollar commitment by the Government of Alberta represents a generous and courageous act of intergenerational wealth transfer. Ingenuity must ensure that its investments bring benefits to Albertans. 
   
• Responsible stewardship of the endowment: The endowment mechanism is a fabulous piece of public-policy that ensures stable long-term funding and is the envy of jurisdictions around the world.  Ingenuity will ensure that this base is available to future generations of Albertans by ensuring conservative use of endowment funds. 
   
• Strong pervasive communications: Every action carried out at Ingenuity is a powerful act of communication. Ingenuity aims to transform Alberta's research and innovation system, helping it achieve world-class performance. This mission can only be achieved through excellence in communications and by creating a culture that supports science in Alberta.  
   
• Ingenuity and creativity of people: The excellence of individuals is at the core of everything that Alberta Ingenuity can aspire to achieve. 
   
• Research excellence: Ingenuity believes that it must catalyze success by creating conditions where the very best can succeed.  Excellent research brings with it the possibility of being the first mover in applications. Only this will attract international attention and incoming investment. As a result, Ingenuity offers high levels of funding to an elite group of recipients. 
   
• Funding decisions using international peer review: If Alberta is to lead the world in research and innovation then it must meet the world standard of excellence.  Ingenuity will involve the best-in-the-world to adjudicate all proposals.
   
• Performance benchmarked by global standards: Ingenuity will benchmark performance to the same high standard that it uses in adjudication.
   
• Effective intellectual property management: Capturing value from research and innovation investments is essential to achieving world-class results. Ingenuity will work with its partners to ensure that Alberta achieves a higher level of performance. 
   
• Effective partnerships and alliances: No agency can go it alone in today's complex and interconnected world. Ingenuity will seek out respectful co-funding partnerships with organizations who share a common strategic intent.
