Accelerator Concept

Advanced laboratories led by significant research personalities, who are given budgets approaching $100 million, to differentiate Alberta’s research institutions and make them globally competitive. Accelerators will focus on Alberta’s sustainable economic prosperity imperatives, such as nanotechnology.

Ingenuity Accelerators will be embedded in Alberta’s top research-intensive institutions, focused on creating social and economic benefits and developing and capturing the benefits from innovative technologies. Each Accelerator will target a field of research critically important to Alberta's economy, establishing results that put Alberta on the global innovation map.

Accelerator laboratories will be led by scientific directors who will control significant budgets, create flexible and stimulating environments, and achieve exceptional results. Although the strategy is simple, its impact will be revolutionary. The levels of support envisioned in this plan will secure the attention necessary to attract international leaders to the province. Outstanding leaders will attract others to join them, establishing a virtuous cycle.

Alberta Ingenuity announced the Ingenuity Accelerators plan in 2007, and the goal is to create at least five Accelerators to position Alberta as a leader in research and innovation.
